Inspirational Athlete – Kenyatta

Image Below: Kenyatta’s first cycle class

Meet Kenyatta. A quiet lady that is a client at The Harris Center. In addition to other challenges, she has difficulty walking at a normal pace. Despite this, Kenyatta eagerly signed up for the Bloom Fitness cycle class and showed up to her first class with excitement.

Her initial attempt at getting on the bike was very difficult and she quickly looked for help. Even with that assistance it was obvious that sitting on the bike was a real challenge and she looked very uncomfortable, physically and emotionally. It appeared that Kenyatta was beginning to question if she could do the cycle class at all. She looked so uncomfortable and apprehensive, the instructor was also concerned.
Class began. When the music started, so did Kenyatta, going very slowly and physically shaking the entire class. Despite that, she completed the entire class. After it was over, she cried because everything had been so hard and none of it went well. The Bloom Fitness cycle instructor and The Harris Center staff thought she would never want to come back.

But she did. Every week, twice a week, Kenyatta showed up dressed for class and with her Bloom Fitness water bottle in hand. And guess what? Slowly and surly she got better. She got stronger.

Today, you would never know that she struggled like she did that first day. Kenyatta gets on the bike and moves fluidly and with confidence….amazing. In fact, once a month, Kenyatta has lead her class in one song.

Kenyatta has clearly benefitted from the Bloom Fitness program. However, our athletes usually give the program more than the program gives them. Kenyatta is another example of that. Her perseverance, determination and bravery have been an inspiration to her instructors, the Harris Center staff and her fellow athletes. Thank you, Kenyatta.

Kenyatta after 50 cycle classes. Strong. Confident and Proud!
